UPMC Research Assistant Basic Science in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a Full-time Research Assistant – Basic Science to support the Role of Chromosomally Tethered department!
This position will work daylight shifts. Hours are subject to change based on business needs.
This position is grant-funded.
This position will be responsible for performing experiments as outlined in the protocol including solution and sample preparation, conducting experiments, operating the analytical instruments, record keeping, data analysis, and report generation.
This is a basic science lab interested in germ cell development and aging as well as DNA repair. They use C. elegans as a model system and combine genetic, cytological, molecular biology, and biochemical approaches. The lab is a multicultural environment that values peoples of all races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, and genders. The employee will both support the activities of the lab (25% time) and participate in a mentored, independent research project (75% time). The employee is expected to engage in the intellectual activities of the lab, including full participation in journal clubs and lab meetings.
The ideal candidate will be intellectually curious and eager to learn new things. They should have prior wet bench experience with molecular or cell biology. Prior experience with C. elegans is not required but a good work ethic and enthusiasm for our studies are essential. Ability to work independently is valued.
Under the supervision of Faculty or Research Associate, accurately completes research projects according to established study design and procedures.
Prepare, label, store and dispose of reagents, and calibrates equipment for research projects.
Assist in obtaining educational resources necessary to perform and interpret research and to remain abreast in the research area of function.
Maintain laboratory inventory, including timely ordering and receipt of required supplies and their proper storage.
Follow the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
Perform approved research projects according to defined protocols and procedures including appropriate collection, recording, storage, and analysis of data, and reporting of results.
Maintain a safe clean laboratory-working environment including appropriate equipment maintenance and usage, by conforming to laboratory and hospital policies and standards.
Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
Follow appropriate research policies and procedures including all applicable laws and regulations and maintains scientific integrity including accurate data storage.
Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biology, or other basic science.
Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for handling and processing specimens for testing, including preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, microscopic examination, etc.
Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.
