Full-time Pharmacist - UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital Pharmacy

The Pharmacist ensures optimal patient outcomes, educates present and future practitioners, and supports drug-related research. This role will be involved in patient care activities supporting a variety of patient populations ranging from neonates to geriatrics. Inpatient and outpatient practice areas include, but are not limited to, general medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, intensive care, orthopedics, oncology, and neonatology.

Responsibilities:

  • Review, maintain, and screen patient medication records and profiles for allergies, drug interactions and therapeutic duplications while entering orders and/or verifying medications.

  • Screen all medication orders for Adverse Drug Reactions/Medication Errors as per Department standards and report through appropriate reporting process.

  • Interpret and evaluate physician orders to prepare, calculate, and dispense appropriate medication dosage forms for inpatient and outpatient treatment in accordance with the Practicing State's Pharmacy Practice Act, Federal Drug Laws, and other regulatory organizations.

  • Prepare and dispense intravenous admixture solutions, as required, using aseptic technique in an accepted sterile product preparation area.

  • Organize daily operational duties and assist in the supervision of pharmacy technicians, pharmacy aides, student interns and other ancillary personnel involved in providing pharmaceutical care.

  • Fill prescription orders in accordance with State and Federal regulations, utilizing technological resources and equipment.

  • Utilize all available technologies in the provision of pharmaceutical care (i.e., computer systems and databases, AcuDose, pneumatic tube system, etc).

  • Provide drug information and/or educational programs to healthcare professionals and pharmacy students.

  • Support drug-related research by assisting in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of investigational/study drugs.

  • Communicate with physicians and nurses to ensure prompt clarification of orders that are unclear, illegible, or incomplete.

  • Sustain the formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic interchange protocols, and promoting rational drug therapy selection.

  • Adhere to all regulatory requirements, professional standards of practice, and hospital quality management policies and procedures in providing pharmaceutical care.

  • Where applicable, document clinical interventions in accordance with Department procedures.

  • Support all clinical initiatives and programs conducted by the Department.

  • Demonstrate behaviors that support the Mission, Vision, and Values Statement of the hospital, the Department of Pharmacy, and contribute to the overall success of our organization.

B.S. degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D.) from an accredited school of pharmacy required. 3-6 months hospital pharmacy experience is preferred. Previous experience or familiarity with investigational drug control procedures and protocol design is preferred.
