UPMC Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Laboratory Technician (Daylight/Evening) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Medical Lab Scientist's salary starts at $24.74/hour!

  • Automated testing lab including the following departments:

  • Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Specimen Processing departments.

  • This position will support the ATL as well as Microbiology, which will include planting, gram staining, Covid analysis, kit testing to name a few.

  • Interact courteously and professionally with laboratory customers.

  • Respond promptly to telephone inquiries.

  • Follow established procedures for specimen collection and processing.

  • Perform accurate qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures.

  • Recognize critical test results and take appropriate action.

  • Maintain equipment, perform quality control checks, and manage supplies.

  • Stay knowledgeable about techniques and principles.

  • Assist with test development and evaluation.

  • Perform High Complexity Testing without direct supervision

  • Assume temporary first-line supervision as needed.

  • Train new employees, students, and residents.

MLS:

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Lab Scientist program,

  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification,

  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory.

  • Prefer 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory. Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

MLT:

  • Associate's degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT),

  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science,

  • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing. Minimum 1year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred.

  • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred. New York License required for NY locations.
